You have Callan's number, Darya said. 'Why don't you call him directly?'

"You know how it is, Harley said. 'Any conversation I have with your brother can't last five minutes without

turning into a fight

"Yet, you still want him at your show.

'Not as my friend. As Callan the megastar. His name is going to draw a huge crowd.'

'But I'm not his publicist/

'Please, will you talk to him? At least pass on the invitation? I won't hold it against you if he says no.'

Darya had put the call on speakerphone.

She saw Callan nod.

Fine. My brother will be there.'

"That's great! See you then!'

Harley hung up.

Callan crossed his legs and cleared his throat. 'I'm kinda busy. I'll have to consult my schedule first.'

'That's not what you said a minute ago,' Darya pointed out. 'And your schedule's empty.'

'I didn't say anything And my schedule's not empty. I'm supposed to teach Marshmallow guitar at eight."

'Marshmallow has no opposable thumbs. He can't play the guitar. Besides, if you didn't want to go, what was

the head nod for?'

'It meant I would think about it,' Callan said defensively.

'So, what's the story between you two?' Darya scooted closer to her brother on the sofa and hugged a throw pillow. 'I remember the two of you always bickered. Yet you agreed to attend her show gratis. Don't forget, this is your first public appearance since you returned to Hagen. The media attention's going to be tremendous.'

Callan pretended to be busy with his phone. 'There's no story. She's your friend, right? I'm just doing this as a favour to you.'

He stood up. 'Send me the e-vite. I've got to go shopping for an outfit.'

'Are you interested in Harley?' Darya asked straight out.

Callan checked his watch. 'Look at the time. Marshmallow must be getting lonely.

I have to go."

Then he fled the house before Darya could get an answer out of him.

She smiled, then called Bianca.

Callan was right, there was work to do if they wanted to make an impression at Harley's first independent show.

The two girls spent an hour at a salon doing their hair, then changed into the dresses Harley had sent.

The final stop was a makeup studio which offered specialised services to the city's elite.

'Miss McAllister, Miss Zimmermann, welcome!' the shop manager greeted them at the door.

Before Darya's marriage, she and Bianca patronised the place frequently and were familiar with the manager.

'Sorry, the place is packed downstairs,' the manager said. 'Would you like to follow me up to the second floor?'

'Sure.' Darya entered the shop with Bianca.

The buzzing of hairdryers stopped.

Conversations paused mid-sentence.

Heads turned.

'May I just say, the dresses are absolutely fabulous,' the manager spoke what was on everybody's mind.

Bianca's cropped cream button-up shirt flaunted her flat stomach.

The glittery silver sequined dress came with a long train and made her look like a mermaid.

She looked every inch the chic city girl who could be both sexy and fun.

Darya's figure-hugging halter-neck dress was fire engine red and showed off her curves and plenty of skin.

Standing side by side, the two women embodied Harley's design concepts of 'Goddesses in the Metropolis."

They nodded at their acquaintances in the styling room and followed the manager upstairs, where two make-up artists were waiting with their array of tools.

'Ooh, I have just the right shade of lipstick for that dress!' the artist assigned to Darya circled her, admired the dress, then whipped out a tube of lipstick labelled 'L'Oréal Paris Reds of Worth Satin.'

Seated next to Darya, Bianca closed her eyes as her makeup artist applied white eyeliner lined with pearls.noveldrama

But she drew the line at pink eyeshadow.

The professional make-up artists took great pride in their work and paid attention to every little detail.

Which meant Darya and Bianca were still in their chairs after more than an hour. Darya dozed on and off while Bianca fought off invading zombies on her phone.

The noise of peashooters holding off a trio of buckethead zombies was interrupted by a commotion downstairs.

'Where's Pat?' A woman's shrill voice said just as a newspaper zombie grunted in rage. 'We came here specifically for her!'

Bianca nudged Darya. 'Wake up.'

'What?' Darya opened her eyes.

'We have company,' Bianca said as she heard footsteps coming up.

Felicia and Regina entered the room without knocking.

Regina saw Darya's makeup artist and went up to her. 'Pat! I knew they were lying when they said you weren't

here.'

Pat answered with a well-trained smile, 'I believe what the manager said was, I was occupied.'

'With what? You are supposed to- Regina froze when she saw Darya. 'What are you doing here?'

Felicia hovered near the door.

She'd recognised Darya as soon as she came in.

After losing her father's jade ring, she'd had all her credit cards frozen as punishment.

As if that wasn't humiliating enough, Micah, her tyrant of a brother, even grounded her for a week.

With her pocket money cut off, she wouldn't have been able to come out shopping if not for Regina.

They'd just had their hair done and decided to come here for makeup before heading out for a night on the

town.

Felicia silently cursed her bad luck.

Why did she have to run into the Darya woman everywhere she turned?

Green with envy, she took in the custom-made dress and the million-dollar jewellery Darya was wearing.

Did Darya's latest boyfriend pay for all that? Felicia wondered.

The woman's life seemed to be getting better by the day ever since the divorce,

yet Felicia's own life had turned

into a huge mess.

She saw Darya's flawless makeup and wanted very much to wipe that nonchalant smile off the gold digger's

face.

But since she seemed to always lose whenever they clashed in the past, Felicia decided to keep her mouth shut

for now and let Regina do the talking.

After all, Regina wanted to marry Micah whereas Darya was his ex-wife.

They two were natural enemies.

Regina didn't disappoint.
