"They are in my luggage,' Avery smiled.

'And my gifts?' Callan rubbed his hands in gleeful anticipation. I've been trying to get my hands on the limited edition X87 hoverboard. Seriously powerful torque, 700 watts, waterproof, has a max range of over twenty miles. Too bad it's only available in-

'I bought you a bubble machine,' Avery said.

'What? Like the type that blows bubbles?'

"The name's kind of self-explanatory, don't you think?'

Callan threw up both hands. 'I'm twenty-five years old, not five.'

He chased after his big brother. 'Come on. You are just yanking my chain, right? Tell me you are joking."

Darya drove while the two brothers bickered in the backseat.

Matthias, their father, was vacationing on some tropical island.

The McAllister family residence was empty except for the team of domestic employees.

Billinger's tall, lanky frame appeared in the open doorway. 'Young Master Callan, welcome home!"

Callan hugged the housekeeper. 'Hi, Uncle Bill.'

'You've lost some weight.' Billinger ran his eyes over Callan.

'Have I?' Callan grinned. 'My agent will be thrilled to hear that.'

'He says that to everyone,' Darya whispered to Callan as Billinger went into the living room. 'Said it to me when

I came home.'

Billinger wielded his magic and prepared a banquet that catered to everyone's taste.

Callan had no complaints.

Neither did Avery.

After the hour-long lunch, all three siblings were slumped on the sofa, rubbing their over-full stomachs.

'I don't think I can move,' Callan moaned. 'Chris is going to blow a gasket when he weighs me.'

'Give him the bubble machine,' Darya said. "That'll calm him down.'

Avery had removed his coat and tie and, when he thought no one was watching, loosened his belt.

Billinger handed out Tums to his wards. 'There's lemon meringue pie in the kitchen.'

'Ooh, I could go for a slice of pie.' Callan moved a finger.

'Chris is going to kill you,' Darys said before turning to Billinger. Do we have any cheesecake?

'Of course,' the majordomo gave her an avuncular smile. 'Coming right up

'We are all spending an hour in the gym,' Avery declared. As soon as we can move."

'Agreed,' Darya said.

'Agreed, Callan echoed

He stared up at the ceiling. 'What do you think Brion's doing right now?

Matthias had four kids-Avery, Brion, Callan and Darya.

Darya checked the time on her phone. 'It's still midnight where he is. Probably sleeping.

'Or bunking in his lab, Callan speculated. 'Brion never sleeps. He's like an owl.'

'Owls sleep,' Darya argued. 'They just do it during the day."

Callan conceded the point. 'Then Brion's like a...'

He scratched his head. 'What's an animal that never sleeps?'

'Dolphins,' Avery said. 'Baby whales, bullfrogs, butterflies, corals-'

'Corals? I thought they were plants. They never move, right? Plus, they kinda look like rocks.'

Avery sighed audibly. 'That's why I bought you the Encyclopaedia Britannica. You should read it before the

pages turn into dust.'

Callan blew out a breath. 'That thing has more than thirty books and weighs a ton.

I only kept them because

they were too heavy for me to throw out.'

'You should keep them,' Darya suggested. 'The books have gone out of print. The set Avery gave you is worth

at least a hundred times their purchase price, more if they are in mint condition. Have you broken the plastic

wrap?'

Callan rolled his eyes. 'I got them when I was seven. What do you think?'

'I think you need to take a refresher course,' Avery interjected. 'Since you happen

to be on holiday, you might as well use the time to recharge. Learn something new. Don't just lie around the house and binge-watch Netflix."noveldrama

'Hey, I learn stuff when I watch TV!' Callan said defensively. 'I've learned a lot from watching "Rolling Thunder

Revue."

'Give me a "for instance.""

'What?'

'Name one thing you've learned from the documentary.'

'Um, well, I learned that Bob Dylan had a pet beagle named Peggy. And that

Martin Scorsese is a great director.

Darya zoned out as Avery and Callan debated the merits of Scorsese's rockumentaries.

She missed this-the delicious food, the cosy living room, the meaningless chatter with her brothers.

It served as a stark contrast to the life she lived in the Cavanaugh household, Three years of neglect, contempt and verbal abuse had worn her out more than she cared to admit.

The more she appreciated and enjoyed her life now, the more she hated how foolish she had been.

Bianca called her an idiot when she insisted on marrying Micah.

Darya realised her best friend had been right.

Curled up on the sofa, she dozed off, dreaming of Bob Dylan and beagles,

'Dolly, wake up.' Callan shook her shoulders. 'Your phone's ringing.'

Darya blinked awake, sat up and took the phone Callan held out to her. 'Hello,' Harley Stevens's distinctive laughter chased away the last bit of Darya's grogginess. 'Darya darling! You have got to come to the show!'

'What show?'

'My show!'

'You are back in Hagen?'

'Yup! I finally talked my backers into letting me stage my own show here. It's happening tonight! You must come! I already called Bianca.'

"Congratulations. I know how hard you've worked to get your own show.'

Harley had her own fashion label and was a renowned designer, but it took more than that to host a fashion

show in the metropolis.

'Tell me about it!' Harley was breathless with excitement. 'Took me six months of planning and half a dozen practice runs. I had to kiss the sponsors' asses and light a fire under my production team, not to mention dealing with the models who must be born with an extra organ just for their egos.'

'Text me the address. I'll be there.'

'And bring Callan! I know he's back in Hagen!'

Darya smiled. 'Is that the true reason for this call?'

'I'm not gonna lie. It's part of it.' Haley paused. 'Fine, a huge part of it. If Callan the international pop star deigns to visit my show, I'll be guaranteed a headline spot in tomorrow's Hagen Daily.'
