Chapter 271
Evelyn was caught off guard by the sudden question. Her expression turned cold, but she quickly composed herself as she understood the situation.
Maria was right there, listening. Lucas was, of course, playing a part. He didn't truly want Evelyn to visit the hospital.
Evelyn continued to look at the blueprints in front of her, her voice calm. "Let me check the time."
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before Lucas leisurely replied, "Mm, don't forget to eat."
Without giving her a chance to respond, he quickly hung up, cutting off any further conversation.
Evelyn wasn't affected by his "concern" about her meals. It was nothing more than an obligatory act, one of many facades he put up, with no genuine intent behind it.
She put down her phone and resumed her work, continuing to calculate and review the plans in front of her.
...
At the hospital, Lucas glanced at his phone. Noticing that the call had ended so abruptly, Maria shot him a disapproving look. "Why did you hang up so quickly? Are you in such a rush?"
Lucas looked down at his laptop screen and raised an eyebrow at her. "She hasn't eaten yet. She's been on the phone the whole time, which has kept her tied up."
Maria was taken aback for a moment before responding, "You seem to know a lot."
After a pause, she asked, "Have you cleared things up with Evelyn about the Miller family matters?"
Lucas didn't answer immediately, his fingers gently tapping away on the keyboard. He gave a faint smile, which could be interpreted as a response.
Maria grew irritated by his attitude. "Stop dodging the question. You know how Evelyn feels about you. I'm warning you don't make trouble outside. Know when to stop!"
She paused and then asked sternly, "You haven't crossed any lines, have you? As for that woman from the Moore family-if you don't handle things properly, don't blame me for taking her out of the picture."
Lucas stopped typing, a smile appearing at the corners of his lips, but his eyes showed no sign of yielding. "Grandma, you know me. Once I do something, I never regret it."
Nor did he ever easily give in.
Maria's heart skipped a beat when she realized the unspoken meaning behind his words. She froze, unsure of how to react.
After a long moment, she sighed. She could pick up on the unspoken firmness in Lucas' tone.
Fine. She wouldn't push it.
Instead, she pulled out her phone and said calmly, "Save Evelyn's new number for me."
Lucas responded lazily with a simple hum as he opened the call log from earlier. He glanced at it briefly and then entered the contact name "Evie". He saved the number and handed the phone back to her.
Maria still looked puzzled, her brows furrowing together. "Did Evelyn just change her number today? I suppose she must have already told you the new one?"
Lucas didn't look up as he said, "Yeah."
Evelyn went straight home after work to rest. She didn't end up going to the hospital. That part had just been an act for Maria's sake.
The internal issues with Flying Seal Group had to be handled, but she was too tired to think about anything else. If Lucas hadn't been trying to poach talent for Arrowpoint Solutions, she would have already been focused on her new project plans.
...
The next day, Evelyn and Sebastian met with Peter Rowe from Jonathan's company's production department to discuss the direction of the new energy project.
Fortunately, everything went according to plan. Evelyn was more confident about the project's future direction after the meeting.
Peter invited them to lunch, but since Sebastian had already made a reservation at a restaurant and Evelyn needed to discuss the project's detailed plans with him, they politely declined.
On the way out, the group caught sight of the office building across the street that was currently undergoing a full high-end renovation. Peter couldn't help but comment, "I just returned this morning from a business trip to Joville. I met with Lucas yesterday at the tech expo, and he was with Tiffany, meeting with tech talents."
Evelyn didn't even raise her eyes.noveldrama
Sebastian narrowed his gaze slightly. "Oh?"
Arrowpoint Solutions was just nearby, and the company had already become a hot topic among those in the industry. Peter was no exception.
He continued, "Arrowpoint Solutions has been quite high-profile since their launch. We see their building every day, and I've even spotted Lucas' car a few times. It seems like he's very hands-on. He doesn't want Ms. Moore to worry, I suppose. Yesterday, I saw Lucas, even with his injury, accompanying Tiffany to Joville for the expo to recruit talent."
Sebastian sneered, "Lucas really is sacrificing everything for a woman."
Why didn't that drone just take him out completely that day?
What do you think?
