Water

Harley got what she wanted-the show was an absolute success.

But the price she had to pay was being hounded by the media.

She couldn't get away even as she escaped backstage.

Journalists and fashion bloggers armed with press passes bombarded her with questions.

Most were about the clothes, but there were plenty about Darya.

Miss Stevens, who was the last model? Is she new?'

"Why did you pick her as the headliner?'

I've never seen her at other shows before. Is she a professional model?'

"What's her name?'

A guy with a Nikon camera shouted, 'What's her number?'

The crowd laughed.noveldrama

Harley sighed.

She turned to them. Just give me a minute.'

She knocked on the last dressing room.

Darya and Bianca came out, still in their catwalk outfits.

Harley stood between them and faced the cameras. 'They are not professional models. They are my business

partners."

Designing clothes had always been her passion, but her parents disapproved of her career choice.

They'd much prefer if she went into law, medicine or finance, like many of her peers.

But Harley was stubborn.

She set off on her own and built a company from scratch.

She had the talent, but not the funds.

1

Establishing her own fashion label at the age of twenty-five would have been impossible without Darya's and Bianca's money.

She owed her success to her friends, and this was a good time to let the public know.

Some reporters recognised Darya and thrust their microphones at her.

'Miss Miller, when did you invest in Miss Stevens's company?'

'Who owns the controlling shares?'

'Are you a silent partner?'

'Where did you learn how to walk like that?'

Darya shot her friend a look.

Harley shrugged and mouthed the word 'sorry."

She knew Darya didn't like public attention, but this was a perfect PR opportunity for their brand.

What she didn't expect was that the media would be more interested in Darya instead of Gallan the pop star.

Bianca linked arms with Darya. 'Come on. Smile for the cameras.'

They took turns answering the media's questions.

'Miss Miller, are you interested in doing a show with us?' A woman thrust her hand out. 'Harley said you are not a professional model, but your walk was impressive.'

In her palm was a business card.

She wore a maroon business suit and her hair was tied into a neat bun.

Harley jumped in front of Darya and spread out both arms. 'Yasmin! Don't you dare poach her

Darya glimpsed the name of the card-Yasmin Jenkins.

Yasmin tried to talk over Harley's shoulders, 'Miss Miller, I believe you are perfect for our Bridal Week show."

'Bridal Week?' Darya arched an eyebrow. 'It's a show for wedding dresses?'

Yasmin nodded. 'That and more. I have just the right dress for you.'

Darya smiled politely. "Thank you, Miss Jenkins. I'm flattered. But I'm afraid I'll have to decline. As Harley said,

I'm not a professional model.'

Yasmin insisted on handing her the card. 'Half of our models are amateurs. That's not an issue. Maybe we can

have coffee and talk more about the details,'

Darya took the card.

Harley stomped her feet. 'You are not actually going to say yes, are you?'

Darya teased her, 'Why not? It sounds like a nice gig and I could use some extra cash.'

'But she's our competitor!' Harley pulled Darya to a corner. "The more attention

you attract for her brand, the less publicity for us.'

'I didn't know our company designed wedding dresses.'

Darya and Bianca only invested in the company to support their friend's dream.

Neither of them was involved in the day-to-day running of the brand.

Harley blew out a breath. Not yet, but we will.'

Darya patted her arm. Relax. I was just kidding. I'm not going to take the gig."

Thew. Harley wiped away a bead of non-existent sweat from her forehead. 'Nice to know our friendship

trumps money."

She said joking. You might change your mind if you know how much Yasmin's paying her models."

Darya smiled. It's not just about that. I might be tempted if this were any other show, but not Bridal Week.'

Why not?

1 have never worn a wedding dress before. I don't want my first time to be on a catwalk.' Darya linked arms

with Harley. Come on, Bianca looks like she's ready to kill us.'

While the two of them were talking, Bianca was left alone to fend for herself.

She was swamped by the reporters and kept shooting dark looks their way.

As Darya walked back to face the media, she didn't notice a man standing behind a huge potted fern.

Micah didn't mean to eavesdrop, but he happened to catch the entire conversation between Darya and Harley.

Two minutes ago, he had shaken off Ryan and come backstage on a whim.

Just as he suspected, he discovered yet another side of Darya he never knew before.

He didn't know she could strut down the catwalk like a trained model and had no idea the

a fashion brand.

But he did know she never wore a wedding dress before.

Because they never had a wedding ceremony.

Not only that, there was also no reception or wedding photoshoot when they got

married.

Come to think of it, the only evidence that the marriage ever existed was the divorce certificate.

Micah remained in a corner and watched Darya handle the media with aplomb.

investor in

She was confident but not arrogant, approachable but not easily misled by the occasional trick questions.

Looking at her, Micah started to doubt the intel he gathered.

He had his assistant run a background check on Darya Miller before they got married.

There was no employment record of her anywhere in Hagen.

He'd always thought she was a grifter, a scam artist who picked him as a long- term meal ticket.

But that impression was completely at odds with this woman who talked about 3D rendering technologies and their applications to the fashion industry.

There seemed to be two Daryas.

Pre-divorce Darya was calculating and maybe a little boy crazy.

She was besotted with him and seemed content with the life of a housewife.

1

Post-divorce Darya was assertive and knowledgeable.

Despite having no prior work experience, she took the job of Paragon's vice

president like a duck to water.

Just how much more surprises did she have in store for him?
