Chapter 94 Runway Models

"Darya" Harley hugged her friends. 'Bianca!"

She extended a hand to Callan, wearing a polite smile on her face. "Thank you for coming.'

As they shook hands, they both made sure to present their best sides to the

camera.

Callan said under his breath, 'Of course I have to come. Dolly made me.'

He glanced around. 'Nice place you got here. But doesn't your company have enough money to rent somewhere

with doors?'

Harley rolled her eyes when the cameras panned away from her face. 'The show's about the clothes, not about

the location.'

"You are right,' Callan smirked. 'It also hides the fact that you are broke. Seeing as you are my little sister's

friend, I could give you a loan.'

'Save it. I don't need your help.'

'Yet, here I am.'

Bianca checked her wristwatch. 'One minute and forty seconds. You lose. Pay up.'

Darya shrugged. 'I haven't lost yet. They are just talking."

"That's a fight, not a conversation.'

Before they came here, Bianca made a bet with Darya about how long it would take for Harley and Callan to

start bickering.

Their usual record was about three to five minutes.

Darya had her money on five; Bianca said they couldn't last more than two minutes.

Harley left Callan and caught up with her girlfriends. 'I've got something for you.'

'What is it?' Bianca turned around, intrigued. 'Champagne?'

'It's a little too early for that. Wait for the after-party.' Harley led the way backstage, where employees in black t-shirts hustled in and out of dressing rooms with multiple outfits.

It was a scene of organised chaos.

Staff had to shout to be heard above the din, making last-minute changes and conducting final checks.

There was no walking.

Everybody was sprinting, including models in five-inch heels.

The place was packed with models, assistant designers, managers, stylists, makeup artists, hairdressers, and publicists.

Photographers were working frantically to squeeze in a few dozen shots before the show began.

Harley handed two backstage passes to her friends, then unlocked the last dressing room in a row and pushed the door open 'Voila!'

Wow! These are gorgeous! Bianca admired the racks of clothes in clear protective plastic. 'Why aren't your

models wearing them?

'Because they are for you guys.

'We are already wearing the dresses you sent,' Darya said.

'You are.' Harley said. 'But these are better. I didn't send them because I wasn't sure I could finish the

alterations in time. I also needed to find the right jewellery to match.'

She picked out two outfits. "The blue bag's for Bianca. The red one's for Darya. You can change here. Hurry.

Once you are done, go find a guy called Kaua. He's a redhead and wears a nametag. He'll tell you what to do.'

Then she dashed out of the place.

Darya and Bianca took a moment to admire their new dresses, then they exchanged a look.

'I thought we were just here to watch, Bianca said.

'Harley apparently has another plan in mind,' Darya said.

They got changed, then went out in search of the man called Kaua.

Onstage, the show had already begun.noveldrama

The theme was 'Goddesses in the Metropolis.'

Judging from the ages of the models, Harley had clearly taken a very liberal interpretation of the word

'goddesses.'

The show was opened by a toddler in the arms of a young woman.

The girl wore a khaki-coloured coordinated outfit and a jaunty sunhat over her head.

Too young to understand the concept of stage fright, she waved happily at the audience and babbled in

incoherent baby talk.

Next up was a trio of toddlers dressed in blue overalls and red long-sleeved t- shirts, dubbed 'the Super Mario

Look.'

Loud cheers went up in the audience, probably coming from the kids' parents.

As the models' ages progressed, the outfits went from cute to playful to complicated.

Teenage girls strutted down the runway with their hands stuck irreverently in the pockets of the harem

trousers.

While photographers were busy documenting the event, fashion critiques and potential buyers whispered in

hushed tones.

They took note of the all-natural fabrics used, which were non-irritants and felt softer on the children's skin, which was usually more sensitive than adults'.

Harley's design concepts were not just all about the glam.

She also wanted her clothes to be safe.

Darya was number sixteen, part of the 'Young Women' group.

Her gown was a vibrant red.

The hem was reinforced with double layers of silk that made it look like it was on

fire.

Golden threads ran through the dress and sparkled under the twinkling lights.

Sewn just below the sweetheart neckline was the image of a phoenix being reborn in a fire.

Darya carried herself well, keeping her shoulders back and head straight. Her eyes were level at all times.

She was feeling a little stiff, but she hoped the audience wouldn't notice.

After all, she only knew she was going onstage less than fifteen minutes ago.

Kaua, the director, was obviously used to having last-minute changes thrust at him by the whimsical designer.

His only advice to Darya and Bianca was, 'Confidence.'

Darya adjusted her breathing, set her walking pace to the beat of the music

playing.

She took long strides, placing each foot directly in front of the other.

As she approached the front of the stage, she said to herself, 'Stop. Pose for one,

two, three seconds. Pivot. Walk.'

On her way back, she shared a look with Bianca, who returned the smile.

Bianca sashayed down the catwalk in five-inch heels, swaying her hips in a rhythmic yet seductive manner.

Her hair was done up in braids, which coiled under a laurel wreath.

All eyes were on her as she floated in a light-green dress, wearing an emerald necklace and matching teardrop earrings.

If Darya was the cold, distant phoenix, Bianca was the playful, mysterious forest

fairy.

Darya wished she could have stayed to watch Bianca walk, but she was hustled backstage to change.

Harley had made a bold decision to let her close the show.

Kaua griped about it, but complied since Harley was the one who signed the pay cheques.

As the director sent Darya off, he prayed that his boss had made the right call
