Fortunately, there was red wine to cleanse Josephine's palate.

The sour, slightly astringent taste perfectly balanced out the overwhelming sweetness of the food, making the meal rather enjoyable as she ate and drank at the same time.

Just as she was about to finish eating, Ethan pressed down on her fork.

"That's enough. If you keep eating, you won't have room for dessert."

Josephine burst into laughter. "Are you a kindergarten teacher? Why are you monitoring how I eat? Don't tell me you're like this with everyone. I bet if the lady of your heart found out, she'd scold you for being overprotective."

"Trust me, she wouldn't."

"Are you sure?" Josephine scoffed. "Then you really don't know women. Every woman has a possessive streak."

At that thought, she suddenly felt she should start keeping her distance from Ethan.

He was in love with someone, and chances were high that he would end up with her in the future.

Even if Josephine had no romantic intentions, she doubted that Ethan's true love would be fine with him staying this close to another woman.

But... She was a little reluctant to distance herself from him.

All this time, Ethan was the only person who had been by her side.

If he left too, she would have to face everything alone-whether she was sick,

fainted, or starving, there would be no one else to rely on.

Lifting her wine glass, she downed it in one go, a wave of sadness washing over her.

Her whole life had been a complete failure.

One glass after another, before she knew it, she had finished more than half the bottle.

Her head started to spin, and her vision blurred.

Slumping against the table, she stared blankly at the unfinished cake, lost in thought.

Just then, her phone rang.

Letting out a cold laugh, she answered, "Hello!"

paused for a moment before asking, "Have you been drinking?"

"Whether I'm drinking or not, what does it have to do with you? Just say what you need to say!"

"Where are you drinking? Don't tell me it's some social event. But then again, it's way too quiet... you're at

don't just sit there like a mute."

"Who are you calling mute?" Josephine snapped, then added impatiently, "Do you

have something to say or not? If not, I'm hanging up."

"Don't you dare hang up on me. Oh well, talking to a little drunkard like you is pointless-you won't

remember a thing anyway. I'll call you tomorrow instead. Get some sleep. Good night."

Josephine stared blankly at her phone as a wave of emptiness washed over her.

She had hoped he would show a little concern. Maybe asked why she was

drinking or if she was feeling down.

But he didn't care at all.

He didn't even bother to talk to her a little longer...

Silent tears slipped down her cheeks.

She picked up the wine bottle, poured the last bit of wine into her glass, and downed it in one gulp before turning to Ethan with a frown. "There's no more wine."

"I'll get you some white liquor then," Ethan said.

Taking her glass, he turned away and poured her a cup of warm water instead.

She didn't suspect a thing and lifted the glass to drink.

Since there was still a bit of red wine residue at the bottom, the water carried a faint alcoholic taste. In her drunken state, she truly believed she was drinking white liquor.

After gulping it all down, she even grinned triumphantly. "Heh, this white liquor

isn't as strong as I thought! See? I drank it just fine!"

"Mm-hmm." Ethan barely held back his laughter.

"This liquor is actually quite strong, yet you downed it in one go without even blinking-you're not a bad drinker at all. Let me pour you another," he said.
