Chapter 224
The next morning, Kris was sitting on the cold, narrow bed in his holding cell, staring blankly at the floor. He hadn't slept a wink last night, but he didn't feel the effects because he still felt numb. However, he knew it was his body's mechanism to keep him from feeling the immense pain again, even if just for a while.
"You have your first visitor, Miller." The voice of a cop cut through the silence.
Kris looked up and saw Alden standing on the other side of the cell bars, his face a mixture of concern and disbelief. "I was here last night but they wouldn't let me because it was late."
He put his hands against the bars. "Why didn't you call me, Keis?"
Kris exhaled, looking back down. "How did you find out?"
Alden hesitated, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "You're all over the news, Kris. People are talking about it everywhere." He paused, then added, "You've got some supporters, but... most people are comparing you to your mother. Saying crime runs in the Miller family."
Kris scoffed, his lips twisting into a bitter smile. "They're right."
Alden frowned. "Don't say that."
"It's true," Kris muttered, his voice hollow. "I killed him. I killed Henry."
Alden shook his head. "No, you didn't. Henry's still alive-he's in critical condition, but he might survive. But what did he do anyway to make you go all ape-shit on him? Did he say something against Lassa?"
Kris closed his eyes, his jaw tightening. He wished it was that simple-that it was just Henry saying something that had made him angry enough to knock his teeth out.
Alden's brow furrowed. "Won't you tell him? Why did you go after him like that?"
Kris lifted his head, meeting Alden's eyes. His throat felt tight, and when he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. "Henry's Tessa's father."
Alden blinked, taken aback. "What? How...how is that even possible?"
Kris let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. "Henry and Karen... They played me for a fool. She was sleeping with him before she and I slept together. No...correction... We never had sex. She just made me believe we did and took advantage of it to make me believe I was responsible for her pregnancy."
His breath hitched. "Tessa Isn't mine," he whispered, as the numbness wore off, bringing back the stabbing pain. "My little angel... she's not mine."
Alden was silent, processing everything. His mouth opened, but no words came out for a few seconds. Finally, he shook his head in disbelief. "That's... that's insane. I can't believe Henry is such a traitor. I'm so sorry, Kris."
Kris scoffed again, bitterness flooding his voice. "Don't be sorry for me. I should be sorry for myself for being the idiot who fell for their lies."
Alden frowned. "What are your lawyers saying, Kris? How are they planning to get you out?" Kris didn't respond, staring down at the floor once more. The silence made Alden's eyes widen in disbelief. "You haven't called your lawyer, have you?"
Kris remained silent. When he was

because there had been too many things going on in his head.
Alden let out a breath. "How did you find out about Tessa?"
"Rita," Kris replied. "She told me everything."
Alden's eyebrows shot up. "Karen's mother? Wow... that's... she's an honorable woman. Did she come looking for you?"
Kris shook his head. "No. We bumped into each other at the police station yesterday. She came to turn in the bag containing the evidence against-"
His eyes widened as he shot to his feet, muttering to himself. "The evidence..."
Alden frowned, concerned. "What evidence?"
Kris looked at him "The evidence
against my mother. Karen was hiding it. Rita gave it to me before she told me the truth about Tessa. I didn't turn it in because I was too angry. I just needed to confront Karen and see Tessa."
Alden tensed. "Where is it now?"
"In my car," Kris answered. "I tossed it in the backseat. The car is still at Henry's company."
Alden nodded. "Okay, I'll go talk to the cops. They'll give me the car key, and I'll go get the bag." Kris slowly shook his head, recalling back to when they booked him in. His keys hadn't been on him.
"I left the key in the ignition." His face darkened with realization. His pain hadn't allowed him to think about anything else apart from confronting Henry.
"That means you didn't lock the car. You just closed the door." Alden concluded. They were both thinking the same thing.
Alden straightened. "I'm sure the car and the bag are still there. I'll head over there and bring it back." Alden arrived at Henry's company, his gut clenching as he spotted Kris's car still parked in the lot. Getting out of his car, he made his way towards it.
Hooking his hand to the backseat door handle, his stomach dropped as the door unlocked with ease, showing it had truly been open since yesterday.
Opening the door, he peered his head into the backseat, and the bag was... sitting comfortably in the backseat like Kris had said.
Alden quickly grabbed it and opened it. Rummaging through it a bit and scanning through the folded papers and pen drives, it still contained the evidence against Kris' mother.

Relief washed over him.
