She had wiped the slate clean. She and Colton were nothing more than strangers now.

Colton wasn’t ready to give up, though.

“Allison, I’ve sent Melany to prison. She really was transferring the company’s assets. And the child isn’t mine at all.”

Abandoning his pride and self-respect, Colton repeated the same question he had asked numerous times before.

“Can we start over?”

Even as he said it, a voice in his head told him that it was impossible. But his heart was still hoping that Allison…

Might change her mind somehow. Any hint of hesitation on her part was enough — he was willing to take chances.

Before Allison could say anything, Kellan, who had been helping her put on the shoes, stood up and took her face in his hands. Without any warning, he took her lips in a long, torrid kiss.

“Mmm…” Allison closed her eyes, her body already turning into jelly. When Kellan finally broke the kiss, she shot him a glare and said into the phone,

“No way. We won’t see each other again, Colton.”

Allison drew the line, once and for all.

Her resolve was unshakable, to the point of being cruel.

Colton heard a ringing in his ears, but he pushed past it and whispered,

“If I died… would you come back to me?”

The man had lost his mind. Allison knew that it wasn’t just a bluff — Colton would really do it if he wanted to.

But she had never been one to give in to anyone’s threats.

“If you die, I won’t even visit your funeral. I won’t mourn you. But Keanu will be disappointed and heartbroken. He has taken great care of you and had faith in you, Colton. But you kept letting him down.”

Colton’s eyes dimmed, and he felt his very soul leave his body. He glanced at the blood stains on his palm after covering his mouth when coughing.

“You’re right. Allison, I… I wish you happiness. With him.”

After ending the call, Allison felt an odd sense of unease creeping over her.

While she knew that Colton wasn’t bluffing, he wasn’t the type to entertain suicidal ideations.

She was still mulling this over when Kellan came up behind her and lifted her up in princess style.

Allison put her arms around his neck, her legs dangling over the crook of his arm. The red shoes on her feet were dazzling in the bright light of the room.

Kellan slowly carried her to the bed.

“Allison, you should be paying attention to me now.”

“I still have more shoes to try on.”

“You’ll take them off anyway. You have plenty of time for that later.” Kellan set her down, then proceeded to take off her heels with one hand while the other went up to cup the back of her head.

Another passionate kiss.

Outside, the night traffic flowed smoothly, and the city lights flickered with life and energy as the world kept turning.

A month later, the entire city of Ontdale was bustling with excitement. Drones flew in formation to spell out “K&A” in the sky, and dozens of yachts sailed along the city’s river, decorated with festive banners.
