Chapter 969: Fever
Chapter 969: Chapter 969: Fever
After finishing dinner with a few business owners, Jiang Shaoqing decided to cancel the subsequent entertainment plans due to feeling unwell over the past two days.
He didn’t go home; his headache was particularly severe today.
It seemed like a cold.
And he’d just had a few too many drinks.
His entire body felt dizzy and uncomfortable. His driver, supporting him, frowned when he saw the boss’s condition.
"Mr. Jiang, how about I take you to the hospital?"
Jiang Shaoqing rubbed his temples, the pain unbearable.
"No! Just take me to the apartment and buy me some cold medicine. I’m not going back to the office today." Jiang Shaoqing got into the car, leaned back against the seat, and closed his eyes.
The driver started driving and dropped Jiang Shaoqing off at his apartment. Lately, Jiang Shaoqing rarely went back to the Jiang Family; he had been so busy that he didn’t have time to deal with his mother pursuing him.
The Shang Family had been unusually quiet recently, calm to the point of feeling strange. Jiang Shaoqing didn’t understand why Bai Xiao, Bai the doctor, was so wary of the Shang Family. Yet, he continued his policy of keeping eyes on the Shang Family. If anything happened, he would be the first to know.
He had benefited greatly from this situation—at the very least, Bai Xiao’s plans had clear direction.
They had proven extremely advantageous for him.
The old man often told him during conversations that he still needed more training. Compared to him, Bai the doctor had sharper insights and was more attuned to policy directions, with a business acumen exceeding his own.
The old man had always held Bai Xiao in high regard.
Back at the apartment building, the driver went to buy medicine while Jiang Shaoqing made his way upstairs. Returning to his room, Jiang Shaoqing felt himself beginning to falter—this cold was hitting hard.
The driver arrived with the cold medicine and was heading upstairs. Just then, he ran into Shen Ye, followed closely by Zhuo Lin.
"Xiao Ye, what are you doing here so late?" noveldrama
Shen Ye had called the office earlier today and heard that his son was sick. Although he often feigned indifference, this news left him unsettled. This rascal was notoriously elusive once he left the house—tracking him down was no easy task. Learning that Jiang Shaoqing hadn’t left on a business trip, Shen Ye decided to seize the opportunity. Hoping to facilitate something between Zhuo Lin and his son, he brought her along.
This was an ambush.
The driver immediately recognized Shen Ye’s intentions upon seeing her and promptly handed over the medicine and keys.
"Madam, Mr. Jiang has a pretty bad cold and needs someone to take care of him. Here’s the cold medicine and the keys."
Shen Ye grew even more anxious upon hearing this.
Her son, who had always been resilient since childhood, rarely took medicine or got injections for minor illnesses, preferring to tough it out. For him to have a driver buy medicine this time, it must be serious. How could Shen Ye not worry?
"Alright, you can head back. We’ll go upstairs and check on him. Zhuo Lin, you know how stubborn that child is. Who knows how sick he really is? If it weren’t for his prideful, tough attitude, there’s no way he’d take medicine."
In her heart, Shen Ye greatly admired Zhuo Lin. After all, she was her chosen candidate for a daughter-in-law. But the relationship between the two had always been lukewarm.
Whenever Shen Ye arranged for them to meet, they politely exchanged a few words before parting ways—leaving two frantic mothers in despair.
This time, Shen Ye personally brought Zhuo Lin along to observe what was going on between the two. She had to see for herself what antics they might be up to.
Unbeknownst to Shen Ye, Zhuo Lin secretly rolled her eyes. Despite appreciating Shen Ye’s intentions, Zhuo Lin couldn’t help but think: Madam Shen, I’m not trying to thwart your plans, but your son’s personality isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Even if he’s outwardly charming, he wouldn’t be able to pass her standards. His temper is insufferable, a domineering man with no clue on how to care for a woman. Arrogant to the point of irritation, just seeing him makes her want to punch him twice.
Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Jiang Shaoqing had already fallen into a feverish, half-conscious slumber.
Shen Ye looked at her exhausted, feverish son with tears in her eyes. Zhuo Lin, noticing things were getting worse, sprang into action.
A fever this high was dangerous. Zhuo Lin quickly poured warm water, urging Shen Ye to feed Jiang Shaoqing the medicine immediately. Fortunately, the driver had purchased cold medicine along with fever reducers and anti-inflammatory drugs—otherwise, they would’ve needed to make another run.
Finally, Shen Ye managed to administer the medicine, watching her son drift back into a hazy sleep. The effort triggered Shen Ye’s high blood pressure.
Left with few options, Zhuo Lin helped Shen Ye into the adjacent room to rest. High blood pressure was no joke, so she insisted Shen Ye remain quiet and assured her that she would personally take care of Jiang Shaoqing. Shen Ye could rest easy.
After taking medication, Shen Ye soon fell asleep as well.
Zhuo Lin was at a loss.
What kind of predicament was this?
Quietly closing the door, Zhuo Lin turned her attention to Jiang Shaoqing, who was mumbling fever-induced gibberish. Checking his temperature with the thermometer, she gasped: 39.5 degrees Celsius.
Not good!
The fever reducer didn’t seem to be working.
She smacked herself lightly on the forehead, realizing that medicine would take time to take effect.
Grabbing a basin of warm water, she soaked a towel and began wiping down the sweat on his forehead and body. It was truly an arduous task.
Jiang Shaoqing’s tall and muscular build meant Zhuo Lin had to exert considerable effort to get things done.
Unbuttoning his shirt, which was already crumpled like dried mustard greens, she couldn’t help but admire his solid physique when his toned muscles were revealed.
So pleasing to the eyes.
If Jiang Shaoqing was good for anything, it had to be his well-maintained physique.
But now, with his face flushed from the fever, her fingers accidentally brushed against his skin while wiping him down. The blazing heat radiating from his body snapped Zhuo Lin out of her momentary trance. This was a patient—had she lost her senses?
She was practically taking advantage of an unconscious man.
Was she losing her mind?
She tried pulling her hand back, but suddenly, a large, warm hand grabbed her wrist and placed it firmly against his chest. Zhuo Lin froze in shock.
She immediately looked up. Was Jiang Shaoqing awake?
If so, this was bad—how on earth would she explain herself? She’d been caught red-handed, taking liberties while he was feverish and out of it.
Utter humiliation.
Then, she saw Jiang Shaoqing still had his eyes closed. With a sudden turn, he flipped her over, pulling her whole arm and pressing her against the mattress and bedding. Zhuo Lin’s chilliness must have been soothing to Jiang Shaoqing, for he nuzzled her, burying his face in her hair and resting against her cheek before drifting back to sleep.
Zhuo Lin panicked.
What was the meaning of this?
Jiang Shaoqing was clearly taking advantage of the situation!
She tried pushing him away with all her strength.
But to her dismay, she found that she was no match for Jiang Shaoqing. Her slender arms were incapable of breaking free from his grip, much less contending with his strong physique, which continued to radiate feverish heat against her.
This was a disaster.
Unable to push him away, what options did she have?
She cautiously checked his forehead again. Thankfully, his temperature seemed to be dropping. The fever reducer was finally working.
She felt a bit more relieved.
She pulled the blanket up to cover Jiang Shaoqing, but inadvertently ended up under the same blanket herself.
Jiang Shaoqing murmured contentedly, clutching her tightly, startling her once again.
What was this scoundrel trying to do?
She had merely touched him; how could he reciprocate—not to mention in such a dramatic way?
The sheer absurdity left her on the verge of tears.
She was completely defenseless.
What do you think?
