Chapter 087 The End of the Song and the Departure of People
"Victory, man, what's it mean to you?"
Bruce zeroed in on the slip-up in Luke's words. One quick exchange and he nailed the contradiction. This team manager's sharpness and decisiveness were on full display.
Luke straightened up, his eyes getting serious. "To me, victory is everything. Everything is for victory!"
Short, sweet, and packing a punch, his words screamed ambition. Not just Bruce, but the three coaches nearby looked surprised. They didn't expect the usually low-key Luke to have such fire.
Bruce wasn't letting it slide that easy. He raised an eyebrow and smirked, "Everyone says that."
"But not everyone does it." Luke shot back, cool as a cucumber. His bright eyes said it all: I can do it!
Bruce, sitting right in front of him, didn't flinch. He stared at Luke, like he was trying to find a crack in his armor. But Luke didn't back down, meeting his gaze head-on. Mike, sitting nearby, nodded and cut the tension, "Did you read our playbook?" The playbook, as the name suggests, is the tactical game plan for each team.
But the playbook at rookie training camp is different from the official league one. The official playbook is top-secret stuff, not something you share around, especially at a
rookie camp.
This playbook is more like the team's game plan for the new season, especially for different positions.
At rookie camp, most teams give this version of the playbook to their top rookie picks, so they get a feel for the team's plans and their potential role. It's all about communication and understanding.
"Yeah." Luke nodded and grinned. "Honestly, I was kinda surprised you wanted to interview me. 'Cause in your playbook, Rex Grossman is still your go-to quarterback, and my passing style is way different from his. He's more of a short-pass guy."
As he spoke, Luke suddenly remembered something. "Oh, this should be yours." He dug into his backpack.
Mike and Bruce exchanged puzzled looks. Just as Bruce was about to speak, Luke sat back up, holding an envelope. He looked at Mike, then Bruce, and finally handed the envelope to Bruce with a smile before sitting back down.
Bruce was a bit taken aback, then opened the envelope and peeked inside: there was a hundred-dollar bill and a card.
He pulled out the card, which read, "Give this to me after I help you win the Super Bowl."
Bruce looked up and saw Luke's confident smile-no arrogance, no pride; no nerves, no panic, just calm. Recalling the earlier gaze, things got even more interesting.
This was a little trick of the Washington Redskins.
On the last page of the playbook, they'd stick a hundred-dollar bill and then, during the interview, ask the rookies if they'd read the whole playbook, testing their sincerity and honesty.
In the past few seasons, the Redskins had tried this trick twice; this was the third time. Of course, when asked, all players would say "yes" or "finished," but only half would mention the hundred-dollar bill, while the other half wouldn't. So, when the team manager brought up the hundred-dollar trick, those players would feel embarrassed.
Next, the Redskins would watch the players' reactions: honesty? Lying? Making excuses? Of course, those who had truly read the playbook and showed great qualities were the best.
But today, they met an exception: Luke.
Not only had Luke read the playbook, but he also returned the hundred-dollar bill in this way.

Honesty, focus, dedication; confidence, strength, persistence; politeness, friendliness, grace. A small gesture showed so many virtues; more importantly, Luke's hunger for victory and strong belief were truly impressive.
Bruce's gaze turned thoughtful. He handed the envelope to Mike and continued the interview casually, "You mentioned your playing style is different from Rex's. But as I see it, you're both mainly passing quarterbacks. Am I wrong?"
The conversation rolled on; the ten-minute interview was wrapping up nicely.
After leaving the room, Luke didn't have time to mull over the interview. After a long day of mental and physical exhaustion, he needed to chill and unwind.noveldrama
"My only thought right now is to lie in a hot tub, holding a glass of champagne, with two bikini-clad girls sitting next to me," Marcus said, closing his eyes and letting his imagination run wild.
Luke laughed, "That's not one thought; that's three different thoughts, and each one is a daydream."
Everyone chuckled. Marcus opened his eyes, trying to argue, but before he could speak, he slumped his shoulders and weakly waved his hand. After a whole day of running around and talking, he was completely wiped out.
"Did you guys hear? Today, only three players were interviewed by all thirty-two teams," David said enthusiastically from the side. But everyone was so tired that their reactions were slow. So David continued, "Von Miller, Marcell Dareus, and Patrick Peterson."
"What? All defensive players?" Luke immediately caught the info. The three players were a linebacker, a defensive tackle, and a cornerback-all defensive positions. "What about the offensive players?"
David waved his hand repeatedly, "That's not the point, come on! Didn't you notice? No Cam Newton!" After saying that, David couldn't help but laugh. It seemed Luke wasn't the only one in the rookie camp who didn't like Cam.
Actually, it's impossible for a quarterback to be interviewed by all thirty-two teams. Teams like the Green Bay Packers, or those not good at training rookie quarterbacks, wouldn't look for backup quarterbacks among rookies. They'd prefer to find targets in the trade market or free agency.

"Isn't the more important point that the top draft pick might slip away?" Logan quickly noticed another highlight and laughed, "If it were me, I'd pick Von Miller. That guy's speed, strength, and tackling skills are outstanding! He's a tackling machine!"
"Let's wait and see," Rahim joined in the fun with a smile. "How did your interviews go today? Everything smooth? I had good talks with the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles."
"I talked with the San Francisco 49ers, but they didn't seem very interested," Logan slumped his shoulders, looking dejected. "I love the San Francisco 49ers so much. If necessary, I'd show them my heart. But they don't seem to need a tight end. God, why?"
"Don't complain to me. At least you got an interview," Luke said, kicking Logan's ribs and knocking him off the bed, making everyone laugh again. "Besides the San Francisco 49ers, no other teams interested in you?"
Logan didn't get up, lying on the floor with a look of despair but still answered, "Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They seemed very interested. I don't want to go to Cleveland, Ohio. It's practically a barren desert." "Like you have a choice," Luke's words made everyone laugh again. Lying next to them, Marcus joined the conversation, "The Cleveland Browns seem interested in me too. Who knows, we might still be teammates."
"Who wants to be your teammate," Logan pretended to gag, making a disgusted sound. Marcus couldn't hold back anymore and jumped up, "Hairy beast, who are you talking about? I'll show you!" Marcus sat on Logan's stomach, and the two started wrestling.
The other three either sat or lay down, watching without any intention of intervening. Then, in the next second, Logan and Marcus stopped and teamed up to pull the other three into the fray. Pillows flew, and wrestling ensued, turning the room into a chaotic
mess.
The rookie training camp ended like this. After college graduation, another group of people would bid farewell to their professional playing careers; more players would step onto the field, starting a new chapter in their lives. Unlike college, where they fought side by side, their next meeting might be as opponents. But that's still lucky; if one is on the field and the other on the bench, meeting but not playing together, that's the saddest.
But that's competitive sports. Passionate, yet ruthless. All good things must come to an end. Before officially parting ways, before the final curtain call, before leaving the ivory tower for the harsh reality, before leaving the rookie camp in Indianapolis, they still enjoyed their last moments of college life, their last moments before becoming professional players, their last moments of growing up.
Who knows? Maybe one of the five in this room would say goodbye. So, they celebrated and partied to the fullest.
