Chapter 078 Tremendous Pressure
After picking the players, Joe just turned and bounced without any big speeches or fancy instructions. He just threw out a "Do your best," and dipped, leaving the seven players staring at each other, all confused.
Luke looked up and checked out his six teammates.
The three offensive linemen were right tackle Anthony Castonzo from Boston University, left guard Clint Boling from the University of Georgia, and center Brandon Fusco from Penn State University.
The three receivers were tight end Logan Newman from UCLA, wide receiver Jeremy Kerley from TCU, and wide receiver Julio Jones from the University of Alabama.
In the football draft game, where you went to college is a big deal 'cause coaches and scouts need to figure out if a player is just good 'cause of the system or if they've got raw talent. A system player shines 'cause of the coach's tactics, while a talent player can still ball out even if the playbook gets busted. So yeah, your college coach and performance matter a lot.
But that's just for the draft. In training camp, where you went to school doesn't matter as much. Coaches pick players based on the last couple of days of tests and vibes. So, Luke and Logan ended up together again. Is that a good thing?
Luke's brain buzzed with a task update. The new requirements were in red: "Passing yards, over fifty yards; passing completion rate, sixty percent; passing target, wide receiver Julio Jones, successful connection three times or more; opponent to beat, cornerback Richard Sherman, successful pass twice or more."
Basically, out of ten plays, Luke had to hit Julio at least three times and beat Richard twice, letting a receiver or tight end catch a pass over him. Even if Luke wanted to use his chemistry with Logan, he didn't have much room to play with.
Plus, he had to keep a sixty percent completion rate, meaning only four screw-ups allowed; and he needed over fifty passing yards, so if all ten passes were good, each had to be at least five yards. One mess-up could snowball into a disaster.
Luke started missing the first task. This new one wasn't just tough; it was brutal! Looking up, Luke saw the worry and doubt in his temporary teammates' eyes. Except for Logan and Julio, those looks were all too familiar. Before the rookie camp kicked off and after the physical tests yesterday, he was surrounded by the same looks.
In competitive sports, being humble and self-deprecating doesn't help. Luke wasn't about to do that either. He took a deep breath, clapped his hands to pump himself up, and called his temporary teammates together. "Alright, let's talk. Tell me your best routes. And if anyone's good at all routes, now's the time to brag! Give me some good news, like, right now!"
Confident and chill, a little joke lightened the mood, and everyone started to smile. Logan shot back with a joke, "Isn't everyone good at all routes? Or do you have some favorite passes you wanna tell us about?"
With that back-and-forth, everyone laughed, and the communication flowed smoother, setting a good tone.
The groups were set quickly, and without wasting time, the training match kicked off. The first matchup was a big deal: Cam Newton versus Justin James Watt!
Both guys were top rookies this year, both likely to be top ten picks. Their face-off grabbed everyone's attention.
No extra words, the ten offensive plays started.
Justin led the defense, with four guys blitzing and three covering the backfield, going hard at Cam. With the pocket collapsing fast, Cam stayed cool. At the crucial moment, he used his legs to dodge the defense, found a gap, and ran it himself, gaining eleven yards!
On the first play, Cam killed it. Faced with the opponent's strategy, he stayed calm and made the right call, leading the offense forward. A perfect play, worthy of the Heisman Trophy!
The next nine plays were just as intense.
Cam was on fire, both running and passing, totally opening up the game and showing off his top form this season. He kept pushing forward, no sweat. But the defense wasn't just standing around either. They blitzed, went man-to-man, and covered the field like pros. Even against the top draft pick contender, Justin managed a sack, and the secondary broke up two passes. They were killing it!

By the end, Cam had thrown six passes, racking up sixty-one yards-twenty-nine from passing and thirty-two from running. He proved, once again, that he's the real deal! After the tenth play, Cam stretched out his arms, leaned back a bit, and let out a roar like Superman taking off, oozing confidence and swagger. It was like he was telling everyone at the camp: He, Cam Newton, is the top draft pick, no question!
Leaving the field, Cam shot Luke a look, half-smiling in a way that was hard to read. Then he moved on, high-fiving his Auburn buddies, all hyped up. It felt like they were back in their NCAA winning streak!
In the face of such a dominant performance, everyone else seemed to fade into the background. Call it arrogance or call it unbeatable, Cam was on another level.
But Luke didn't have time to worry about Cam. He was already feeling the heat. Based on Cam's stats, a fifty percent pass completion rate (three out of six passes completed) and twenty-nine passing yards would mean failing the special task. And it wasn't just Cam; the other training matches proved it too.
One quarterback bombed all five offensive plays in a row, his confidence totally shot. He managed to complete two out of the next five, gaining just thirteen yards. Another QB had a killer completion rate, nine out of ten, but they were all short passes, only moving the ball forty-one yards. Another guy completed his first two passes, then went for a long one on the third try, only to get picked off, ending his match.
Scott went before Luke, hitting a fifty percent completion rate and gaining thirty-six yards. The worst part? His five failed passes weren't because of sacks or dropped balls; they were all bad throws, making it impossible for the receivers to catch them.
The special task was looking tougher by the minute, and Luke could feel the weight on his shoulders getting heavier.
"Next group!"
Luke and his crew exchanged looks. It was their turn. They walked single file to the twenty-yard line on the right side of the field, and the defense finally showed up:

Standing among the defensive line was another top draft pick contender, Von Miller! Von was a linebacker who'd been an All-American for two years straight, known for his killer sacking ability and total dominance on defense. Compared to Justin, Von's rep and skills were even bigger. Many experts and scouts thought he could go head-to- head with Cam for the top draft pick this year.
Just having Von there was enough to make Luke's offensive line super nervous. Plus, this was a seven-on-seven game, and the defense could use a four-three blitz formation to crank up the pressure on the QB, letting Von's blitzing power go full throttle.
While everyone was focused on Von, Luke caught another look-one filled with disdain and scorn: Richard.
Richard's eyes were blazing with bloodlust and violence, not even trying to hide it. It was like he'd already torn Luke apart with just his stare. Pure violence, pure bloodlust, pure provocation, pure savagery-the primal beastly vibe was already crackling in the air before the game even started.
Luke didn't know what Richard's deal was, but he knew one thing for sure: Richard was ready to tear him apart.
On one side, he had to deal with Von; on the other, he had to beat Richard.
Luke straightened up and shot Richard a contemptuous look, eyes full of challenge. No fists needed, the first showdown was already done. Then, ignoring Richard, Luke started discussing the first play's tactics with his temporary teammates. Both sides were set. Luke called the snap, grabbed the football with both hands, and quickly stepped back, eyes searching for Logan. For the first pass, he needed to build confidence and get things rolling. Logan was still the best bet. But he only caught a glimpse of Logan's back before seeing Von charging like a hungry wolf, fierce and brutal.
Von's speed was insane. Everything happened in a blink-one second? Felt like less. While Luke was still stepping back, he felt a massive hit the next second, and he was sacked, just like that.noveldrama
