Gingerly, he picked up the necklace and helped Darya put it on.

Matthias waved a hand dismissively. 'Avery's got that covered,'

Suddenly, there came two resounding knocks on the door

Bianca burst into the room. 'Darya, I saw

Harley beamed with pride as she admired her design. 'I agree.'

'Oh, hello, Uncle Matthias. Bianca straightened up. I was just coming to tell you guys I saw the Cavanaughs.

They are in the ballroom downstairs. And guess who they brought? Regina, that vile creature!

Bianca's disdain dripped from her words.

She would have used much more colourful language if her good friend's father wasn't there.

'The audacity of the Cavanaughs knows no bounds,' Matthias huffed. 'Well, they've arrived just in time. I shall go and greet them. Engage the enemy, so to speak.'

Determined, he stormed out of the dressing room, leaving the three girls to their own devices.

'They've brought Regina to insult you,' Bianca remarked with a mischievous glint in her eye. 'But now we have the perfect opportunity to witness her humiliation."

'I was worried she might not show up.' Darya shrugged.

'I'm dying to see the look on her face once she finds out who you are,' Harley chimed in. 'It'll be uglier than if

she ate a fly.'

Her disgust for Regina increased after witnessing the woman's drama queen act at her fashion show.

'Oh, and Timothy did some digging. Bianca waved the phone in her hand. 'Morton Cavanaugh has already contacted some reporters and fed them the headline-"Darya Miller Dismissed and Disgraced." He probably thought Avery was going to fire you publicly at the party.'

Darya chuckled softly, unfazed by the prospect.

She found Morton's obsession with meddling in a young woman's private life laughable, especially considering his aspiration of becoming a member of the so- called upper class.

The evening was split into two segments.

'But honestly, why does that bitch deserve to be here?' Felicia sneered, her words laced with scorn. 'Where would she even get an invitation?'

'She works at Paragon.'

But Dad told me they were going to fire her.' Felicia stopped in front of a sink and checked her make-up in the

'But she's still Avery McAllister's girlfriend,' Regina said. 'She can still come here

as his plus-one.'

'It's probably too late for the McAllisters to shake her off now.'

Darya scoffed quietly, her irritation mounting at their words.

'Don't worry about her, Felicia said. 'She's nothing compared to you. I'll bring you

to see my brother later. He'll be thrilled to know you are here.'

'Will he?' Regina sounded unsure.
