Jilted Ex-wife Billionaire Heiress

Chapter 103

Chapter 103 Vendetta

'Dad's flying back in a couple of days,' Avery said. 'So am I. I know you said you didn't want a splashy party when you came home, but Dad thinks-and I agree with him—it's time for everyone to know who you really are. All the ridiculous rumours about you will go away once they realise you are a McAllister.'

Darya thought about it. 'Okay. I guess that's one way to deal with it.'

She had planned to reveal her identity after her position at Paragon was secure.

She wanted the staff there to respect her because of what she could do, not because of who she was.

But at the moment, remaining incognito seemed more trouble than it was worth.

'There's an office party this Saturday,' Avery said. 'Dad will be there. We'll announce you then. Meanwhile, keep a low profile. The more publicity the post gathers now, the more humiliation for old man Morton once the

truth comes out.'

Darya agreed.

It was unusual for her brother to get so worked up.

She could hear the wrath in his voice even over the phone.

Darya ended the call.

It was still early, but she no longer felt sleepy.

She walked over to the French window and drew back the curtains.

The first rays of sunlight flooded the room.

In the distance, she glimpsed news vans parked outside the gated community.

Reporters would have been camped out on her doorstep if the security guards hadn't kept them out.

Darya had to forgo her usual routine of jogging around the community.

She opted for the treadmill in the home gym instead.

After breakfast, she checked the post again.

More reposts, more comments.

Harley, Bianca and Timothy called.

They refuted the rumours, but their voices were drowned out by the tide of malicious comments.

Darya thanked them, said she was fine, and told them the matter would soon be resolved.

After breakfast, she opened the door to Callan, who was wrapped in black from head to toe.

To escape the reporters' detection, he had to sneak into the house in the back of a van delivering groceries.

Two hours earlier, Avery called him and roused him out of bed, asking him to keep Darya company.

Brother and sister duked it out in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with Billinger and Marshmallow cheering them on.

For the rest of the day, Darya worked from home, monitoring the progress of her team remotely via Zoom calls.

Micah marched into his office with a face like thunder.

Norris Hewitt stood in front of the desk with his hands clasped behind his back,

like a misbehaving student called into the principal's office.

'Who's behind the post?' Micah unbuttoned his suit jacket and tossed it onto the chair.

'It was authored by a tabloid reporter. It's a paid post.'

'Paid by?'

Norris swallowed.

He handed over his tablet. 'Your father.'

'You've confirmed this?'

'Yes. Mr Morton Cavanaugh paid the reporter out of his corporate bank account.'

Which was why it only took Norris less than twenty minutes to trace the source of the post.noveldrama

Micah skimmed the report his assistant put together at short notice.

The evidence was irrefutable.

He took a deep breath.

Why was his father targeting Darya?

Morton objected vociferously when Micah married Darya.

He thought his father, more than anyone else, would be happy about the divorce.

Morton was pleased, at least at first.

But ever since he knew Darya was in possession of the jade ring, he started pursuing a vendetta against her.

The post was just the latest in a long series of attempts to discredit and disgrace Darya in public.

As Micah's right-hand man, Norris was intimately aware of Morton's manoeuvres since the old man freely availed himself of the corporate resources.

On more than one occasion, Norris had to talk Morton out of some of his more outlandish ideas, such as hiring a private investigator to follow Darya to her new house, break in and retrieve the jade ring.

Norris was unmarried, but he'd had his fair share of relationships.

It baffled him, the way Morton treated his ex-daughter-in-law.

If Morton hated the woman, shouldn't he be glad to see the back of her after the divorce?

Why would the old man go through all the trouble and expense just to smear her name?

What good would it do for Micah or the company?

Didn't he realise his actions were putting his son in a difficult position?

Even an outsider like Norris could see that.

The assistant kept his thoughts to himself.

Zenith was a good company and Micah was a good boss.

But if he kept getting dragged in to deal with family drama instead of doing what

he was paid for, Norris might seriously consider resigning.

He jumped at the sound of a chair getting kicked over.

Micah snatched up his phone and dialled a number. 'Leave.'

Norris hastened out of the office, easing the door shut on his way out.

Morton picked up after six rings. 'Yes? You are not calling about the post, are you? Norris already did that.'

Micah closed his eyes and kneaded the crease between his brows. 'Dad, Darya and I are already divorced. We don't have anything to do with each other anymore.'

Although he wished to change that soon.

"You don't have to attack her like that,' he said. 'It's not going to accomplish anything. I'd like you to call the reporter, ask him to take down the post.'

Morton snorted. 'I knew you were going to ask me that. I knew you are still hung up on her.'

'I'm not. I just don't think-'

'That's right. You didn't think. You can't seem to think straight whenever that woman's involved.'

'That's not what I'm saying.' Micah had to remind himself he was speaking to his father, not his subordinate.

'I just don't know what you hope to achieve by publishing that post.

'She stole our family heirloom!'
