Chapter 182
Chapter 182:
I sighed, feeling the weight of their frustration. “I know, but we need to be careful. If we act too soon, it might tip off Nathan.”
Dominic ran a hand through his hair, clearly unhappy but resigned. “Fine. But if she steps out of line again, I’m calling the cops myself.”
The conversation left me drained. My family took shifts to stay with me in the hospital, each of them doing their best to keep my spirits up. Some nights were rough, the pain and exhaustion almost too much to bear. Other nights were better, filled with quiet moments of reassurance.
But no matter the day or night, Alex was always there. Every single day, he sat by my side, holding my hand when I needed comfort or bringing me things to make my stay more bearable. He didn’t say much about it, but his actions spoke louder than any words.
One night, as I lay in bed, I glanced over at him. He was sitting in the chair by the window, his head resting against the wall, his eyes closed. Even in sleep, his face was lined with worry.
My chest tightened. How could I hate him when he was like this?
I couldn’t.
Alex had changed, and I could see it clearly now. He wasn’t the man who had broken my heart all those years ago. He was someone who cared deeply, someone who would go to any lengths to protect me and my family.
The relief in the doctor’s voice was palpable. “The toxin is out of your system,” he said, closing his clipboard with a small smile. “You’re cleared to go home, but I must stress that your organs are still weak. You’ll need to eat clean, stay hydrated, and avoid stress as much as possible.”
“Thank you, Doctor,” I said softly, the weight on my chest easing slightly. I wasn’t completely in the clear, but at least I wasn’t in immediate danger anymore.noveldrama
As the doctor continued explaining post-discharge instructions, I felt Alex’s gaze on me. It wasn’t just a passing glance—it was the kind of look that made me feel seen, even in my most vulnerable state. I turned my head to meet his eyes, and there it was again—an unspoken warmth, a quiet reassurance that everything would be okay.
“I’m glad you’re better,” Alex said, his voice low but steady.

His words touched me, and for a moment, I couldn’t find the right response. But then, as I studied his face more closely, I noticed something off. His skin looked paler than usual, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.
“Alex,” I said, my voice sharper now. “Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m fine,” he replied quickly, brushing off my concern. But when I placed my hand on his forehead, I felt the heat radiating from his skin.
“You’re burning up,” I said, my tone a mix of worry and frustration. “Doctor, can you check him, please?”
Alex held up a hand, trying to protest. “It’s nothing serious, Raina. I’m just tired.”
“Tired?” I shot back, crossing my arms. “Tired doesn’t give you a fever. Stop being stubborn and let the doctor do his job.”
The doctor gave a slight nod. “It won’t take long, Mr. Sullivan. Let me just check your vitals.”
Alex sighed, clearly reluctant, but he didn’t fight it. As the doctor examined him, I leaned back on the bed, watching Alex with a mixture of annoyance and affection. How could he be so selfless that he ignored his own health?
When the doctor stepped back, he confirmed what I already suspected. “It’s a low-grade fever, likely due to stress and exhaustion. Nothing to worry about, but you need rest.”
“I told you,” I said, giving Alex a pointed look.
